Official maracas revealed

A listing on Amazon now shows off the pair of Samba de Amigo maracas from Sega, although they look a little different from what we may have expected:

Priced at $14.99, both the Wiimote and Nunchuk can slot into them. So these are the official ones, but there will also be efforts from third parties - such as this pair from GAME:

Samba time is now less than a month away, the game comes out on September 19th.

MadWorld working with ratings boards

In a recent interview, David Corless from Sega explained they are working closely with the ratings boards to ensure MadWorld gets a timely release.

"Yes, it is violent. We don't try to hide that, but as publishers we see it as a fantasy game - it's fantasy violence, over the top, cartoony. We're working with the age rating boards, with PEGI and with BBFC. We're not yet at the end of the game's development, but we're talking to them now to make sure that we don't go over the top".

Probably a good idea, since no one wants another Manhunt 2 saga. MadWorld has been garnering quite a lot of negative attention though and is already banned in Germany.

New House of the Dead game on Wii

Exciting news for fans of light-gun shooting games. At the Leipzig Games Convention, Sega has announced a new entry in the HotD series - The House of the Dead: Overkill.

Exclusive to the Wii, Overkill is a prequel to the existing games and will be jammed full of arcade style shooting and gore. In terms of storyline, Special Agent G and Detective Washington explore strange happenings in Louisiana, only to find.. yep you guessed it, zombies. The trailer has some kind of B-movie feel to it:

Overkill featuresSlow Mofo - Activate time slowdown to enhance headshot opportunities.Coop play - Team up with a buddy to play together on the same screen.Remote reactions - Pistolwhip and other melee attacks for when the zombies get too close using the Wiimote

Screens and a small box art are already available, so take a look at the game's page. HoTD: Overkill will be released early in 2009.

Grasshopper horror backed by EA

Seemingly unlikely partners, Grasshopper and EA have teamed up to make a horror game. As yet untitled, it's being produced by Shinji Mikami (the creator of Resident Evil) and will be directed by Suda 51.

With talents like these on board and EA's.. money, it could be one to watch out for. Suda 51 is already impressed with EA's involvement, commenting:

"They are a great partner, sharing our commitment to quality and innovation while still respecting our independence as a studio, it's very empowering. In other cases, I would want to do something before but couldn't, since working with EA they've provided everything I wanted".

On the other hand, it's a multi-platform effort - those platforms being Wii, PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Overlord game on Wii

Overlord game on Wii

Much-loved publishers Codemasters have announced that Overlord is to have new games on the Wii and DS.

Overlord game on Wii

Overlord started life on the Xbox 360 last year and was generally well received, reviewers likened it to Pikmin. The game's director Lennart Sas spoke:

"We used Pikmin as inspiration, of course - but also games such as Sacrifice; which involved a central character who controls hordes of followers. However, I feel our core mechanics and setting are substantially different and the games differ much more than typical shooters strategy titles. So I say to anyone claiming Overlord is a Pikmin clone - check yourself before you wreck yourself, fool".

That last line may have been tampered with. The DS handheld version of Overlord will be called "Overlord Minions", said to be more of an action-puzzle spinoff. Neither game is expected until 2009.

LucasArts peeved at Nintendo

LucasArts peeved at Nintendo

A report in the most recent Game Informer magazine suggests that a number of companies are annoyed with Nintendo about being kept in the dark about the MotionPlus accessory.

Publishers LucasArts are said to be particularly upset, since Star Wars The Clone Wars: Lightsaber Duels is a Wii-exclusive title which could have really benefited from using the addon, had they known about it. As it stands, the game won't support 1:1 motion.

Nintendo aren't always known for keeping good relations with third parties, was it a mistake this time?

Bugs in Strong Bad

Bugs in Strong Bad

Despite seemingly positive reviews for Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People so far, a number of people are complaining of bugs. Apparently the game is prone to crash at certain points, forcing the player to power down the Wii and restart.

If this glitch is happening to you, Telltale's suggested solutions are:

Turn off the 'Widescreen' option.Disable subtitles.

Hopefully a real fix can be pedaled out soon.

One WiiWare Game and Two Virtual Console Games Added to Wii Shop Channel

If your idea of a superhero is someone with an invincible ego who can type e-mails while wearing boxing gloves, then the Wii Shop Channel has great news for you. The legendary Strong Bad (from the popular Homestar Runner Web series) makes his eagerly anticipated WiiWare debut this week. For even more laughs and clever gaming kicks, you'll also find a satirical space-age shooter on the Virtual Console, along with a classic billiards game for those who prefer to keep their feet planted firmly on the ground.

Nintendo adds new and classic games to the Wii Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

WiiWare
Strong Bad Episode 1: Homestar Ruiner (Telltale Games, 1 player, Rated T for Teen-Crude Humor, Mild Cartoon Violence, Mild Suggestive Themes, 1,000 Wii Points): Charming. Suave. Awesome. These are the words Strong Bad would use to describe himself. In a world gone mad, only one man can be trusted to save the day. A man with an attitude. A man called Strong Bad. As the star of the Homestar Runner Web cartoons, Strong Bad has been answering e-mails (in boxing gloves), pranking his friends, pummeling his enemies, and making people with questionable taste snort milk out of their noses for years now. And he's branched out to star in Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People, a monthly five-episode series. In Episode 1: Homestar Ruiner, Strong Bad's plans to beat the snot out of Homestar backfire, and he ends up with an unwanted houseguest cramping his style. Now he needs to get life back to normal by any means possible. But wait, there's more: Teen Girl Squad comics, achievements, funny costumes and arcade games. You can even send pictures and messages to Wii Friends using Strong Bad's computer. So how about it? Can you handle Strong Bad's style?

Virtual Console
Break In (TurboGrafx16, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone-Tobacco Reference, 700 Wii Points): Gather up to four players for an authentic game of pool right in your own home. Choose from six billiards games including 9-Ball, Rotation and Carom (a game played without pockets). Use Simulation mode to calculate the perfect shot, or select Action mode and check out what went wrong with your missed shots. With all that to choose from, Break In gives players-from beginners to experts-all the elements necessary to enjoy a great game of pool. But it doesn't stop there. Select Technique to practice your angles or even go for a trick shot. Get some help from the CPU and hone your skills. With Break In, you'll be a pro in no time.

Star Parodier (TurboGrafx16 CD-ROM, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone-Mild Cartoon Violence, 900 Wii Points): Star Parodier is the hilarious spoof of the classic Hudson shooter Star Soldier. In this parody, there are three playable ships for players to choose from: the ingratiating PAROCEASER, the hot-headed BOMBERMAN, and the ever-so-introverted PC-ENGINE. Players control one of these unique and original ships and set off to blast their way through eight stages on the planet PAROSON. The comical characters take the color and flavor of the Soldier series to the next level and are guaranteed to leave players mesmerized. In addition to the normal game mode, there are also the familiar two-minute and five-minute attack modes, making Star Parodier the complete package that is sure to have players coming back for more.

Shigsy banned from hobby talk

Shigsy banned from hobby talk

Sources close to Nintendo are claiming that Shigeru Miyamoto has been banned from speaking about his hobbies in public.

This shock news comes from the fact that any inside glimpse into the man's lifestyle could potentially be worth billions to competitors. Many of Nintendo's successful franchises in recent years have been inspired by what Shigsy gets up to in his free time.

Ideas for Pikmin originated from his love of gardening. Nintendogs arrived when he began taking care of a puppy. Donkey Kong hit the scene after he was convicted of fondling monkeys (not really). Wii Fit and Wii Music also came about from his personal interests.

So what's next from Miyamoto? Anything's possible.

Mega Man gets his flicker on

Mega Man gets his flicker on

Looks like Capcom are really going all out to please nostalgia fans with the upcoming Mega Man 9. In a recent interview with producer Hironobu Takeshita, he confirmed that you would have an option to turn on old-school glitches.

"On the NES you couldn't have more than three enemies on the screen at once, so we had to make sure that that's how it stayed in our game. At the part with the dragon and flames, there should be flickering and whatnot".

"In the options of this game, you can adjust that, unlike the old games. We purposely put some of those old-school bugs in, so it does recreate that feel".

I've also heard the game crashes unless you blow air into the Wii slot. It's gonna be good.

Elebits sequel happening

Elebits sequel happening

In a recent interview, Gregg Nolan, one of the producers at Konami revealed that Elebits will be getting a sequel on Wii.

"Mukaitouge-san, who is the producer of the first one, basically said that the DS title will be the next direction for the next DS experience. The first Wii game will be the story and the starting point for the next Wii game. There will be two stories that happen in tandem, one on the Wii and one on the DS. They will overlap with characters, environments and things like that, but each platform will have its own experience".

I don't think 'storyline' was one of the game's strengths to be honest, but I wouldn't mind seeing a sequel.

Capcom aiming for 100 zombies

Capcom aiming for 100 zombies

A couple of weeks back it was revealed that Capcom are bringing a version of Dead Rising onto Wii. It was said that less zombies would be appearing on-screen compared to the Xbox360 original, and thanks to an overlooked snippet in Nintendo Power magazine we can now put a rough number on that.

The developers are hoping to display over 100 zombies at once. Seems like a good number, although reports say the original on Xbox360 achieved close to 800. On the other hand, a number of improvements are being made in Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop:

Combat and aiming controls will mimic Resident Evil 4.Adjustable difficulty level.Improved save system."Small text" bug fixed.Overtime mode is now incorporated into the main game.

No news on whether the psychopaths will be back for this game. Hopefully the worst one of all won't be (Otis, with his incessant phonecalls).

One WiiWare Game and Two Virtual Console Games Added to Wii Shop Channel

The list of available games for Wii owners just keeps on growing as we add another trio of titles to the Wii Shop Channel. This week's lineup features Old West thrills, supernatural chills and a little blue hedgehog whose name you're sure to recognize. Thanks to Nintendo's WiiWare downloadable game service and the classic-filled Virtual Console, building your own blockbuster video game library has never been easier.

WiiWare
Wild West Guns (Gameloft, 1-2 players, Rated T for Teen—Violence, 1,000 Wii Points): Draw your revolver to see if you're the fastest gun in the West. Adjust your speed and precision as targets or enemies appear in front of you. Point and shoot to earn more points. You can aim at anything, so be sure to explore the environment for elements that will earn you more shooting points. Identify your enemies among the characters you encounter, but don't shoot at innocent citizens. Take part in an Old West-style train attack, or challenge your skills in a variety of increasingly difficult shooting challenges in other beautiful, classic and lively Western environments. As you progress through challenges, you'll earn medals and rewards, making for nonstop, addictive action. Play in a two-player multiplayer mode where you and your partner can combine points, or play against each other to find out who's the fastest gun in the West.

Virtual Console
Sonic The Hedgehog (Sega Master System, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): Based on the original Sega Genesis version, Sonic The Hedgehog was re-created as the first Sonic game for the Sega Master System. Not just a straight port, this version includes new stages, bosses, some different zones and a level map. The most noticeable difference, however, is that the Chaos Emeralds have to be found within certain stages other than the Special Stages. Dash through six Zones (including special zones that were only available for the Sega Master System version) and face Dr. Eggman (a.k.a. Dr. Robotnik) at the end of every Zone.

SPLATTERHOUSE 2 (Sega Genesis, 1 player, Rated M for Mature—Blood and Gore, Violence, 800 Wii Points): SPLATTERHOUSE 2 is the sequel to SPLATTERHOUSE, released only on the Sega Genesis. A few months after escaping from the first mansion in SPLATTERHOUSE, the main character, Rick, once again encounters the Terror Mask and must use its powers to rescue his beloved Jennifer. Rick will need to punch, slash, smash and even chainsaw his way through a haunted mansion against unspeakable horrors and terrifying bosses to make it out alive.

Anubis II rated worst Wii game

Anubis II rated worst Wii game

Popular product advice site Testfreaks has rated Anubis II as the worst game on the Wii system, awarding it a lowly 1 out of 10.

Despite its name, the game isn't actually a sequel to anything, thankfully there is no Anubis I. Set in Egypt, you take control of Anubis, a supposed guardian of the underworld in the form of a jackal thing with a shiny staff.

Like all the other Popcorn Arcade titles, Anubis II has been slammed critically across the board for shoddy development using the "GODS" engine made by Data Design Interactive. Popular complaints include:

Bad camera.Ugly environments.Sparse sound effects and awful soundtrack.Impossible minigames.Almost identical to Ninjabread Man.

Should Nintendo exercise some quality control in extreme cases like these? For all intents and purposes Anubis II is considered broken. As a general rule, if Popcorn Arcade is on the box or Data Design are involved, don't even think about it.

Njoy has brought out the first 3rd party Wii Balance Board. Pictured below, it's also a weighing scales - having an LCD display and a speaker for telling your weight.

3rd party balance board arrives

Currently listed on Amazon UK, it's retailing for slightly cheaper than the official version by Nintendo. It uses the same kind of Bluetooth connection and will be compatible with all Wii Balance Board games, such as:

Wii FitWe SkiSkate ItTetris Party

What do you make of it? Considering the prices are similar, I'd probably go with Nintendo's board.

Nintendo researching hologram storage

Nintendo researching hologram storage

A patent filed earlier this year suggests that Nintendo are active in joint-research with a company called InPhase Technologies, looking into potential holographic storage solutions.

"Disclosure is herein made that the claimed invention was made pursuant to a Joint Research Agreement as defined in 35 U.S.C. 103 (c)(3), that was in effect on or before the date the claimed invention was made, and as a result of activities undertaken within the scope of the Joint Research Agreement, by or on the behalf of Nintendo Co., and InPhase Technologies, Inc".

Using holograms, discs are able to store much more data than current Blu-Ray or DVD medium, and transfer rates are higher too. According to the InPhase website, it's the way of the future.

The lack of storage is a common complaint for Wii, but sense dictates that this holographic stuff won't get used until the next generation of consoles, if at all.

Jet Set Radio on Wii

Jet Set Radio on Wii

This is speculative right now. Apparently a trademark was filed last week for Jet Set Radio, separate from the original one done in 2000. This has sparked rumors that Sega is bringing the franchise onto the Wii.

Born on the Dreamcast, Jet Set Radio puts the player into a pair of rollerblades. You skate the streets spraying graffiti, performing tricks, taking on rival gangs and generally "stickin' it" to "The Man". The main character is Beat (he made a recent appearance in Sega Superstars Tennis), but you can unlock other skaters too.

I can't say I played the original, but the sequel JSRF was definitely cool. Jet Set Radiooooooo! Ahh classic.
