Iwata talks about Miyamoto replacement

Iwata talks about Miyamoto replacement

It's no secret that Shigsy is getting long in the tooth, in a recent Q&A with Nintendo, President Satoru Iwata was asked about finding a successor to such a gaming genius:

" Certainly, when it comes to identifying and verbalizing some of the important major findings, not many people can easily succeed him. For example, who other than Shigeru Miyamoto could declare that weighing yourself every day must be fun for everyone? However, the fact that Nintendo software is always full of unique and fun ideas attests to the fact that we have many good game creators. Together with Shigeru Miyamoto, all of them have been making Nintendo software. So, I've always thought that we foster game creators here at the company ".

Mr Miyamoto is currently 56 years old and has been the driving force behind a large number of Nintendo's hit games.

VampiresWerewolvesThe Slasher

The weapons are predominantly guns, e.g. pistols, AK-47s and shotguns. Japanese assassin Miko however may have sword-based attacks that make use of the MotionPlus addon.

Online play is also said to be fully supported. At least four players will be able to join up and enjoy a co-op mode. CPU hunters will fill any empty slots in the team.

The Grinder is penciled in for a holiday 2010 release.

The original Drawn to Life was a hit on Nintendo DS in 2007. Players are given a chance to draw their own character, weapons and other objects to use in the game itself. The package comprised of three types of play, an adventure mode (side-scrolling platform action), a village mode (top-down view of a village where you can interact with people and buy items), and a draw mode where you draw your stuff.

The new Wii version is said to allow for over 100 items, a multiplayer feature and obligatory mini-games like baseball, hockey and soccer. It's coming out this Fall, development is being handled by Planet Moon.

Atlus checks in to the Hospital

Atlus checks in to the Hospital

Atlus has announced a successor to the Trauma Center series. This new entity will feature the same general stylings, but on a grander scale: Hospital.

Hospital will include a number of interesting characters that you can take control of:

Gabriel Cunningham - Similar to TV's House, Gariel examines patients in the doctor's office.Maria Torres - A paramedic skilled at treating multiple patients at the same time.Prisoner CR-SO1 - A rogue surgeon doing hard time, working on patients to cut down on his sentence. Gameplay will be more like an "adventure" in these cases.Tomoe Tachibana - Endoscopic surgeon.

Many people have said that the Trauma Center games were getting stale and needed innovation to breathe new life into the series, this could be it?

A selection of Gladiators are available to choose from, each one has strengths/weaknesses, as well as unique attacks, weapons and a storyline throughout. Brutal in nature, things like decapitations and chopped off limbs are commonplace in the game.

Gladiator AD from High Voltage Software

Keen to avoid button mashing, HVS say the fighting will have a strategic element.

" You will need to study your opponent's weaknesses and think through your attack patterns to succeed in battle ".

The Wiimote will be used to attack and defend, MotionPlus will be supported but not to a mandatory degree. Music is also being taken seriously, the game is being scored by a composer who has experience in making epic themes. Some sound clips are available to download:

The game features a ten year old kid called Max who one day gets a marker in the mail. Players can use this magic marker to draw platforms and other things on-screen with the Wiimote, while the Nunchuk controls Max's movement. An early video shows a concept level in action:

No slots in Pokemon Platinum EU

Nintendo has gone ahead and removed any gambling references in the European version of Pokemon Platinum on DS, they say this is to safeguard children.

Previous Pokemon titles have included a "Game Corner", where would-be trainers can try their luck in winning prizes. All slot machines have been taken out.

Puzzlingly, these features are still available in the US and Australian versions. When approached for clarification, Shigeru Miyamoto spoke coolly:

" Yeah, but the kids in those regions aren't worth safeguarding. "

Shocking. Is Big N being overly protective on this one?

Pokémon Platinum Version Makes Its U.S. Debut

The March 22 launch of the Pokmon Platinum Version video game for the Nintendo DS system is almost upon us, and Pokmon fans are already buzzing with anticipation. This new game in the storied franchise brings a host of new features, including the mysterious new Distortion world, never-seen-before forms of powerful Pokmon, exciting online games in the new Wi-Fi Plaza and strategic battles that are the hallmark of the main Pokmon game series.

"The Pokmon franchise has been a force since it came to the United States more than 10 years ago," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "To date, our two most recent games in the core Pokmon series, Pokmon Diamond and Pokmon Pearl, have sold more than 5.3 million in the United States alone. Pokmon Platinum Version brings fans a set of new challenges, fun and entertainment."

On March 21, Nintendo will host a blowout launch celebration for the game at the Nintendo World store in New York. Pokmon fans will be able to demo and purchase the game a day before it's available in other retail stores. Rockefeller Plaza will become a Pokmon fan's paradise with a myriad of Pokmon activities, including game-play kiosks showing off the game and its online capabilities, the "Pokmon Platinum Plunge," where Pokmon fans will get a chance to win a copy of the Pokmon Platinum Version video game, and opportunities to take photos with their favorite Pokmon characters.

Consumers enjoy Pokmon games, in part, for both their social aspect and their re-playability. For instance, in the new Wi-Fi Plaza, up to 20 players with wireless broadband access from around the world can connect together to experience mini-games, take part in parades and even see a fireworks show. And players who visit the Global Terminal can post their Pokmon for trade to other players around the world. This allows for a greater variety of Pokmon that a player can collect, and also allows players to get Pokmon from other countries, which have become sought-after by many fans. Also the new Global Terminal allows players to use a new item, the Vs. Recorder, to save and post "videos" of their best battles online for everyone to see.

Bethesda falling onto the Wii

Bethesda falling onto the Wii

Bethesda Softworks, the developers behind hit games like Fallout 3, the Elder Scrolls series, and Where's Waldo? have confirmed they're planning to move onto the Nintendo Wii platform. Sean Brennan, an MD at Bethesda spoke:

" We're going to make an announcement on a really big Wii game this year, we have a couple of other things in the pipeline, and it's a format we're really looking at with the right approach ".

" I've got consoles at home but I wouldn't sit and play an 18-rated game with my family on the Wii. Is there space in the Wii market for that? I think there is, but again, it's all about finding out how big that is. Is it 5%? If it's 5% of the market and you can own that space then it's worth doing because you can achieve volume. ".

He went on to say this will be an actual game, not a casual effort:

" We're not going to do a hamster simulator, it's not us. We're not going to produce games for girls or pet-sim products. There's nothing to distinguish them from one another ".

Something to look forward to?

New Punch-Out!! Game For Wii Packs a Nostalgic Wallop

Today the world of video game boxing returns to its roots with the launch of the new Punch-Out!! game for Nintendo's Wii console. The game brings immersive motion controls to an iconic franchise that has been around since the days of the NES. Players are invited to step into the ring as underdog Little Mac as they go toe-to-toe with an array of memorable characters, including familiar faces like Glass Joe, King Hippo and Don Flamenco.

The motion-sensitive Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers turn the swings players make in real life into on-screen punches. Both novice and veteran gamers can pick up Punch-Out!! and punch their way to the top. The optional Wii Balance Board accessory (sold separately with Wii Fit) can be added to provide an extra challenge for advanced players who want to literally bob and weave through their fights. For those who insist on old-school Punch-Out!! purity, the game also can be played with classic NES-style controls by turning the Wii Remote controller sideways.

Even players who have battled through the original games hundreds of times will find new challenges with Punch-Out!! for Wii. For instance, once Little Mac (with the help of trainer Doc Louis) has pummeled his way through all the contenders, they return to offer him new challenges in Title Defense Mode. Only this time, their traditional weaknesses have been eliminated and players must find new ways to achieve victory. In this mode, the once-harmless Glass Joe now wears headgear, and King Hippo's vulnerable belly is protected behind a manhole cover. The new twists ensure fans enjoy a completely new play experience.

For the first time in the Punch-Out!! series, a head-to-head multiplayer mode lets players compete against one another. Both players take on the role of Little Mac and match wits as they trade uppercuts, jabs and body blows. With a series of well-placed punches, Little Mac transforms into the gargantuan Giga Mac, who can land more powerful blows and is more difficult to take down.

"Punch-Out!! is back, keeping all the charm of the original while delivering a knockout punch with new twists to experience and enjoy," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "As part of one of Nintendo's most storied franchises, this new Punch-Out!! game will surprise and delight fans with even more ways to enjoy its timeless game play."

Remember that Wii features parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about this and other Wii features, visit Wii.com.

Zelda Classic Becomes 300th Virtual Console Game

Every Monday for two and a half years, Nintendo has introduced new downloadable games and applications for the Wii console. Today marks a milestone for the Virtual Console section of the Wii Shop Channel, home of some of the greatest titles in video game history. The classic The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask becomes the 300th Virtual Console title available for download. It's one of the highest-rated Nintendo 64 games of all time, and its three-day time cycle and deeper, darker storyline offer players a different experience than a traditional Zelda game. People who played it years ago can relive their gaming roots, while those who never picked it up can discover its fun and charm for the first time.

Not to be overlooked, the second Art Style puzzle game for Nintendo DSiWare makes its debut, along with the WiiWare games CRYSTAL DEFENDERS R2 from SQUARE ENIX and Silver Star Chess from Agetec, Inc.

Virtual Console
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (Nintendo 64, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone - Cartoon Violence, 1,000 Wii Points): Link must save the world! This time, he finds himself trapped in Termina, an alternate version of Hyrule that is doomed to destruction in just three short days. Link must race to recover the Ocarina of Time (which allows him to manipulate time in multiple ways), defeat challenging bosses in dungeons spread across Termina and discover the key to the mystery of Majora's Mask. Along the way, he'll obtain new weapons and items and help other characters (some strangely familiar) in their everyday lives. In addition, Link must use a wide assortment of masks scattered throughout Termina, each with its own specific use or power. Never before have three days offered so much in the way of action, mind-boggling puzzles and depth. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask is an adventure unlike any other!

Nintendo DSiWare
Art Style: PiCTOBiTS (Nintendo, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Nintendo DSi Points): Your goal in Art Style: PiCTOBiTS is simple: clear large blocks that fall from above ("megabits") by combining them with "bits" (square blocks) of the same color. Add in the ability to pick up bits and place them anywhere on the touch screen, and you'll quickly find that strategy is critical to your success. By clearing the bits, you gradually reveal each stage's hidden game character - look for favorites from classic NES titles - and earn coins that can be spent to unlock DARK stages or to listen to the game's soundtrack in MUSIC mode. This grand mix of familiar elements and new game play leads to the uniquely enjoyable experience that is PiCTOBiTS.

WiiWare
CRYSTAL DEFENDERS R2 (SQUARE ENIX, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone - Mild Fantasy Violence, 800 Wii Points): In CRYSTAL DEFENDERS R2, you must deploy various units, such as Fencers and Black Mages, to stop waves of encroaching monsters from escaping the area with your party's crystals. There are many types of units to choose from: Some specialize in powerful short-range attacks, some wield far-reaching magicks and still others are equipped with bows, enabling them to bring down aerial foes. Deploy units in strategic locations to take full advantage of their traits. Each time an enemy breaches your defenses and reaches a map's exit, your party will lose crystals. When all your crystals are gone, the game is over. CRYSTAL DEFENDERS R2 offers several new, challenging maps containing multiple entrances and exits. It also introduces three varieties of Power Crystals, allowing you to enhance the abilities of your units, while new jobs, including Flintlock and Tinker, set the stage for even more complex strategies. Can you defend all the maps without losing a single crystal?
Silver Star Chess (Agetec, Inc., 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone - Mild Suggestive Themes, 500 Wii Points): Silver Star Chess has two modes: 1-Player and 2-Player. 1-Player mode allows you to play a chess match against the computer opponent. 2-Player mode allows you to play against another person. In 1-Player mode, you can select one of five different computer opponents, as well as turn the background music off, adjust sound effects and access in-game help features. Also, during the match, you can redo your last move, save the game at any point or resign from the game. After the match has ended, you can review each move made during the match. While reviewing the match in this way, you can resume that match at any point.

Nintendo Celebrates First Anniversary of WiiWare Downloadable Game Service

WiiWare, the downloadable video game service for Nintendo's Wii home console, launched one year ago today. It arrived with a promise to provide a venue for game developers to showcase their ideas, while delivering to consumers the newest, most interesting games available at accessible prices, directly through the Wii Shop Channel in their Wii consoles. With 81 games in its library, WiiWare ensures that there's something for everyone. But beyond quantity, WiiWare offers quality games and experiences for all types of Wii owners.

WiiWare removes barriers that make console game development expensive, and helps developers connect directly with consumers. WiiWare games have been created by more than 40 different development studios, from large companies to small startups. In fact, more than half the games in the WiiWare library were created and self-published by small independent studios, many with five or fewer employees.

"The first anniversary of our WiiWare service is a milestone that marks how far the service has come and how much great content is currently available," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "We encourage everyone to get their Wii consoles connected to the Internet so they have access to the full range of WiiWare games."

Nintendo's roster of quality WiiWare games stands as an example of what creative minds can accomplish. Titles range from completely original creations to names that are instantly familiar and beloved. Just look at a small sampling of what has been accomplished in just one year's time:

• World of Goo from 2D BOY won numerous industry awards after showing that a small development team with a big idea could make an incredible physics-based goo construction game.
• Tetris Party from Tetris Online, Inc., introduces a new version of the classic game, complete with multiplayer options, new game modes and support for the Wii Balance Board (sold separately with Wii Fit).
• Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People from Telltale Games, the first episodic series on a console, is a hilarious five-part adventure game series featuring the popular Homestarrunner.com characters.
• The critically acclaimed retro-styled BIT.TRIP BEAT from Aksys Games and Gaijin Games reminds longtime video game fans of their gaming roots
• LIT from WayForward Technologies is a stylish horror action puzzle that has players fending off creepy – and creeping – darkness.
• The beautifully enchanting LostWinds from FRONTIER lets players use the Wii Remote controller to control the power of the wind.
• Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King from SQUARE ENIX brings a unique adventure from the hugely popular franchise to WiiWare.
• Mega Man 9 from CAPCOM returns a classic franchise to its old-school, retro looks and lets players relive the glory days of gaming.
• Dr. Mario Online Rx from Nintendo brings online multiplayer game play to everyone's favorite virus-busting puzzle game.
Bonsai Barber from Nintendo is the first-ever first-person grooming game that requires players to give haircuts to a colorful cast of oddball and demanding plant-based characters.

Looking ahead, consumers can anticipate yet another year of interesting WiiWare games, including:

• Cave Story from Nicalis, arguably the best-known indie game of all time. Cave Story takes players into a world where a race of rabbit-like creatures runs free on a serene island.
• Icarian Kindred Spirits from Over the Top Games, where players control Nyx, an enigmatic winged girl, who must descend from heaven in search of her missing friend Icarus.
• Super Meat Boy from Team Meat, an indie game in which players take the role of a cube of raw meat who must save his princess from the clutches of evil.
• BIT.TRIP CORE from Aksys Games, the follow-up to the well-reviewed BIT.TRIP BEAT with a similar graphic style and rhythm component, but featuring a completely different retro game mechanic.
• Final Fantasy IV: The After Years from SQUARE ENIX, the long-awaited sequel to Final Fantasy IV that takes place over a series of nine episodes.

Nintendo DS Product Line Sells More Than 1.04 Million, Sets Industry Record for April Hardware Sales

Powered by the launch of the new Nintendo DSi hand-held system, the Nintendo DS franchise set a new all-time U.S. record for April hardware sales for any video game platform, according to the independent NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. Nintendo sold more than 827,000 Nintendo DSi systems in April and an additional 215,000 Nintendo DS Lite systems, for a combined total of more than 1.04 million. This brings life-to-date sales of the Nintendo DS franchise in the United States alone to more than 30 million.

At the same time, Nintendo's Wii console remained the No. 1 home system in the United States, selling more than 340,000 in April, more than the other current-generation home console systems combined. Wii has sold through nearly 20 million in the United States since its launch in November 2006.

"Nintendo systems and software represented 56 percent of the industry total shares in April, indicating continued strong consumer preference for quality and value," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "Looking ahead, we are excited to introduce active-play games like Punch-Out!! and Wii Sports Resort into the market."

Six games published by Nintendo finished in the top 10 best-sellers of April, including the top four games of the month. These include Wii Fit at No. 1 with more than 470,000 sold, Pokmon Platinum Version at No. 2 with more than 432,000 sold, Mario Kart Wii at No. 3 with more than 209,000 sold, Wii Play at No. 4 with nearly 170,000 sold, New Super Mario Bros. at No. 7 with nearly 119,000 sold and Mario Kart DS at No. 8 with more than 112,000 sold.

Mama responds to Science Papa

Mama responds to Science Papa

Yesterday we heard the first news about Science Papa. It doesn't exactly take a keen eye to realize this game "borrows" heavily from the Cooking Mama format made popular by Majesco.

In a press release, Mama herself has spoken out on the matter:

We dated briefly (when he had much better hair). Now he clearly wants a piece of the best-selling pie by associating himself with an incredibly successful, and I'll emphasize, happily married, woman.

Frankly, he never appreciated my cooking and I grew weary of his tedious "experiments". You want real mind-bending science, go figure out how to make Toulouse Cassoulet for your next dinner party of 20 and let me know how it goes, Papa.

Looks like Papa just got his ass handed to him. I just want to know who Mama is married to?

Rocket Knight Adventures new game

Rocket Knight Adventures new game

A magazine in Germany called M! Games is reporting that a new title in the Rocket Knight Adventures series is being made.

Published by Konami, Rocket Knight Adventures was a popular side-scrolling platform game around during the Sega Genesis era. The main character is an opossum knight called Sparkster.

They say the new game is to feature 3D sprites on 2D environments and is under development by Climax. No details on which platform it might head to at the moment. Take all this as rumor for the time being.

Nintendo and MATHCOUNTS Give Math a Makeover

Nintendo is trying to give mathematics a makeover by partnering with MATHCOUNTS, a nonprofit organization that promotes math education. Between now and March 25, MATHCOUNTS is challenging its middle school math clubs across the country to boost their membership in a quest to win Nintendo DS systems and copies of the new Personal Trainer: Math software.

MATHCOUNTS is a national enrichment, coaching and competition program that promotes mathematics at more than 48,000 middle schools in every U.S. state and territory. Personal Trainer: Math plays on the portable Nintendo DS system and includes more than 40 fun, fast-paced math exercises, from basic addition and subtraction to more extensive multiplication tables and calculation ladders. Up to 16 players with Nintendo DS systems can wirelessly race to finish their problems, even if only one player has a game card.

Nintendo will provide Nintendo DS systems and an equal number of Personal Trainer: Math software to MATHCOUNTS. How many? (2 x 4 x 5 x 2)! You figure it out. As an incentive to get clubs to participate and increase membership, MATHCOUNTS will randomly select four schools with at least 12 participating students in their MATHCOUNTS Club Programs to each receive 20 Nintendo DS systems and 20 copies of Personal Trainer: Math.

"Anything that gets kids more interested in math helps prepare them for whatever careers they eventually choose," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "Personal Trainer: Math is great in a competitive club environment."

"Math teaches kids how to solve problems creatively and develop critical-thinking skills that will help them in the future," said Lou DiGioia, executive director of the MATHCOUNTS Foundation. "Personal Trainer: Math will be another helpful tool that students in our programs can use to make learning mathematics fun, exciting and challenging."

Catch all the fish you can before someone steals them from you. Strategy is fundamental in this exciting game. One to four players can play Penguins & Friends at the same time, provided they can handle the polar cold. The board is made up of ice blocks with a set number of fish under them. The ice blocks are hexagonal and form a structure like a beehive. The starting position of the ice blocks can change, creating different game boards.

Nintendo President Announces Wii Storage Solution, New Zelda game and 50 Million Global Wii Shipment

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata today revealed surprises for consumers and an expanded palette of video game development opportunities for the industry during his keynote address at the Game Developers Conference. Iwata announced a new storage solution for Nintendo’s Wii home console and showed video highlights of a new Nintendo DS game from The Legend of Zelda™ franchise.

Video game developers now have expanded opportunities given that worldwide shipments for the Wii system surpassed 50 million units and worldwide shipments for the Nintendo DS franchise are at more than 100 million units. Iwata said, “It is in the power of game developers to invent things that gamers have never seen – or even imagined – before.”

Nintendo also noted several key initiatives that are on the way for consumers, some of which are available at the Nintendo GDC booth.

Nintendo DSi

The new portable Nintendo DSi system goes on sale in the United States on April 5. For the first six months after launch, consumers who buy the system and connect to the Nintendo DSi Shop will automatically receive 1,000 Nintendo DSi Points, which can be redeemed for downloadable Nintendo DSiWare™ games and applications through the Nintendo DSi Shop. In order to receive the free Nintendo DSi Points, consumers must access the Nintendo DSi Shop by Oct. 5, 2009, and the Nintendo DSi Points can be redeemed at any time after that (wireless broadband access required). Similar to how the WiiWare service works in the Wii Shop Channel, the Nintendo DSi Shop will feature a variety of downloadable Nintendo DSiWare™ games and applications. These games and applications will be available at four different price categories: free, 200 points, 500 points, and 800+ points. Consumers can purchase Nintendo DSi Points in the Nintendo DSi Shop with a credit card or by purchasing a Nintendo Points Card™ at retail locations for redemption in the Nintendo DSi Shop. All points from one Nintendo Points Card will need to be redeemed at the Nintendo DSi Shop. Nintendo Points Card will start to become available at select retail locations beginning Apr. 5. Iwata gave conference attendees a glimpse into some of the upcoming Nintendo DSiWare games and applications such as Moving Memo (name not final) and WarioWare : Snapped! . Moving Memo (name not final) lets users create animated digital flipbooks of their own design, while WarioWare: Snapped! uses Nintendo DSi Camera functionality for a fresh gaming experience. On the show floor, conference attendees are able to experience some of the Nintendo DSiWare games and applications that will be available soon. Bird & Beans ™ and Art Style ™: Aquia ™ are fun mini games that will be perfect to play on-the-go.

Nintendo DS & Nintendo DSi Software

The new The Legend of Zelda™: Spirit Tracks game that Iwata announced will utilize the intuitive touch control of Phantom Hourglass in an all new adventure that will please longtime Zelda fans while keeping the game accessible to all DS owners. The concept behind this Zelda game includes utilizing a steam locomotive to travel around the world, switching Phantom and Link to explore the dungeons, and solving puzzles using new items.

Wii

As the library of downloadable WiiWare and Virtual Console games continues to grow, Wii owners have asked Nintendo to provide easy, expanded storage space. Starting today, Wii owners will be able to save downloaded WiiWare, Virtual Console video games, and Channels directly to High Capacity SD cards, in addition to SD memory cards. To play games that have been saved to SD cards, consumers will be able to select and launch them from an SD Menu icon on the Wii Menu. (Note that when launching games or channels from an SD card, an equivalent amount of internal Wii memory is required. To clear space from the internal memory, users can transfer games or channels from the Wii Menu to the SD card). This feature is included in the latest version of the Wii System Menu Update, which owners will receive immediately after performing a system update today. Gamers will be glad to have that additional storage space, as the Virtual Console will expand to include the arcade versions of classic third-party games like STARFORCE by Tecmo Ltd., and Mappy, Gaplus and Tower of Druaga by Namco Bandai Games Inc. starting today. Upcoming games Punch-Out!! and Excitebots: Trick Racing are available to play at Nintendo’s booth. Excitebots: Trick Racing , a new and refreshing take on the classic Excitebike series from the arcade and NES days, is slated to launch on April 20, while a new game in the classic Punch-Out!! series will be on store shelves on May 18.

WiiWare

To highlight new development opportunities for independent developers, Iwata unveiled a game for the WiiWare downloadable game service called Rock N’ Roll Climber ™, which uses the Wii Balance Board accessory to help users simulate the experience of rock climbing. The game is being developed by Vitei.
